Twitter isn’t the hellscape I remember.
I’ve had a Twitter account for 10+ years. I never used to be on Twitter because growing a following there was insanely hard for me. Social media has long been a mystery to me, though I’ve put in work to try and understand it. As a self publishing author, I’m now trying more than ever on Twitter.
I’m only now (within the last few years) starting to get a hang of how to grow on these platforms. I could probably do a whole lot better on Twitter, but I’m pretty happy with my growth rate right now.
What I’ve been doing to grow on Twitter is actually the same thing as Instagram: posting pictures and memes that I make, slap on a few hashtags, and add a relevant question. This has seen me grow more on Twitter than I ever have in the past.
I’m also engaging with other Twitter users, which is something I’m not even attempting on Instagram.
I don’t expect a ton of growth, but the growth has been more than what I initially thought I’d have.
I went from 5 followers on my account to 30 in 1.5 weeks. If you think that’s bad, just remember it’s better growth than I’ve ever had on Twitter. That puts things into perspective.
If you’re here reading this, thinking wow I’d really like to follow his Twitter now, fear not–here’s a link to my Twitter just for you.
What I need to do is set aside time to really research how to grow in these spaces. More importantly: how to grow a following that actually wants to read my book/future books. After all that’s the whole point. I’m not on social media because I like it.
If I happen to crack the Twitter code, I’ll be sure to update you on the methods I used.
Tomorrow I’ll talk about how blogging has been, and I’ll let you in on something really surprising that I found out through this blog.
(Hey I actually have an idea of what I’m doing around here again).
Until then, I hope you have a wonderful day,
Colin J Switalski
